A man believed to have the largest family in the world, including 39 wives, 94 children, 33 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, has died in the northeastern Indian state of Mizoram.
Ziona Chana, 76, was the head of a polygamous Christian religious sect of 4,000 members, and his extended family all lived together in a four-story, 100-room mansion in the remote village of Baktawng Tlangnuam.
Mr. Chana, a construction worker, developed a rota system for which his wives would share his bed every night while his remaining spouses shared a nearby dormitory.
"I consider myself a lucky man to be the husband of 39 women and the head of the largest family in the world," Chana told the Daily Mirror in 2012.
The polygamist married his first wife, Zathiangi, at the age of 17 and reportedly married 10 of his other wives within a year.

As his senior wife, Zathiangi was given responsibility for housework.
His children and their partners lived in different rooms in the building, but shared a common kitchen. The household was self-sufficient, ran its own school and grew its own plants.
This has made his unconventional villa a tourist attraction.
A guest house was built in the residence to accommodate visitors, including many from abroad.

"With a heavy heart, Mizoram said goodbye to Mr. Ziona, who is believed to be the head of the largest family in the world," said Mizoram's Prime Minister Zoramthanga, who, like many residents of the state, has a name, Mr. Chana Tribut.
"Mizoram and his village in Baktawng Tlangnuam have become a major tourist attraction in the state because of the family. Rest in peace, sir!"
Doctors in Mizoram said Mr. Chana died in the state capital, Aizawl, after his diabetes and high blood pressure worsened.
It is controversial whether Mr. Chana was the head of the largest family in the world - a Canadian allegedly fathered 150 children.
