Search and rescue workers work in the rubble of a 12-story residential tower that partially collapsed on June 24, 2021 in Surfside, Florida. It is currently unknown how many people were injured as search and rescue operations continue with rescue workers from across Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.

Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett confirmed that at least one person had died.
"The building is literally like a pancake," said Burkett. "This is heartbreaking because to me it doesn't mean that we will be as successful as we wanted to find people alive."
Rubble surrounded the area directly in front of the building, and cars up to two blocks away were covered with a light layer of dust from the rubble.
The Miami-Dade Fire Department was looking for residents who may have been trapped under the rubble of the condominium. The American Red Cross has set up a reunion site for family and friends near the site of the partial building collapse.

Burkett warned the death toll was likely to rise, saying the building manager had told him the tower was full at around 1:30 a.m. when it collapsed, but the exact number of those present was unclear.
About half of the approximately 130 units in the building are affected, said Miami-Dade County's Mayor Daniella Levine Cava at a press conference.
Rescuers had at least 35 people removed from the wreck by this morning and heavy equipment was brought in to stabilize the structure to give them more access, said Raide Jadallah of Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue.
