High schooler arrested in assault that put classmate on ventilator, Texas cops say

A high school student was arrested after allegedly causing serious injuries to a classmate in a planned attack at a party, Texas police officers say.
The arrest of 17-year-old Reid Mitchell follows the December 3 attack by Cole Hagan, whose brother said he is unlikely to play football again because of his injuries, KTRK reported.
Hagan suffered two fractured skulls and a broken collarbone in the attack, which KTRK said occurred in the Houston suburb of Lake Jackson.
The 16-year-old, a Brazoswood High School student, was lured outside during the party when another teenager told him his car was damaged, his brother Cory Hagan told KPRC. While outside, he was hit by one or more teenagers who he believed were his friends, his brother said.
"Go get your boy off the street," one of the teenagers wrote to Cole's friend after the attack, KPRC reported.
He was taken to the Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, where his brother said he had been on a ventilator for several days.
"Cole turned off the ventilator and is breathing on his own, and they got him out of bed today to take a few steps," said Cory Hagan on Monday. "He still has a long way to go, but he is fighting hard and we believe that God will restore his health."
Cory Hagan has asked everyone to come forward with a video of the "cowardly" attack, which he says was orchestrated by his brother's soccer teammates. A $ 20,000 reward is offered to anyone who has recorded footage.
"Our focus is on keeping him alive while he struggles for his life," Cory Hagan told The Facts in Brazoria County. "We will ensure that all parties involved are fully prosecuted."
In a statement to KRIV, a Brazoswood High School spokesman said he was aware of the attack and that the Lake Jackson police are working on the investigation.
"If more information is found in the course of the investigation, we will take appropriate action," said the head boy. “We expect our students, staff, and the Brazoswood community to come together to support the victim and the family. Any retaliation or threats will not be tolerated and students will be charged to the fullest extent of the law. "
Mitchell was charged with aggravated assault and others involved in the attack have been identified but not yet charged, according to The Facts newspaper.
Cole's brother told KTRK that the children who instigated and carried out the attack, as well as those who watched, "must all be punished".
"It is inconceivable that he could be injured and attacked in this pointless act of brutality," added Cory Hagan to KPRC.
