Movie stars and crew pay tribute to the tragic death of Halyna Hutchins, a camerawoman who died on the set of Rust.
According to the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office, Alec Baldwin, who stars in the film, fired a "prop gun" on Thursday that killed Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza. "Rust" actor Frances Fisher tweeted Friday that Souza had told her he had left the hospital.
On Friday, Joe Manganiello, who last worked with Hutchins on the film "Archenemy", wrote a tribute to the cameraman on Instagram.
"I woke up with the news and read the news and I was shocked," he began the post's caption. “I was so lucky to have @halynahutchins as my DP on 'Archenemy'. She was an absolutely incredible talent and a great person. She had such an eye and visual style, she was the kind of camerawoman you wanted to see successful because you wanted to see what she could do next. "
Manganiello continued, “She was a fantastic person. There was no pressure she couldn't handle. She was a great collaborator and ally for everyone who knew her. Everyone who knew her cheered her on. I don't think this could happen in this day and age ... prop gun shots could kill a crew member? "
"This is a terrible tragedy. My heart goes out to her family and especially her son. I feel so sad today for everyone who knew her and worked with her," added the 44-year-old actor.
Archenemy director Adam Egypt Mortimer retweeted a thread he made last year about filming with Hutchins. Mortimer also tweeted, "I'm so sad to have lost Halyna. And so angry that this could happen on a set. She was a brilliant talent who is absolutely committed to the arts and film."
Several directors and cameramen, including Jame Gunn, have also paid tribute.
"My biggest fear is that someone will be fatally injured on one of my sets," the Suicide Squad director tweeted. "I pray this will never happen. My heart goes out to everyone affected by the tragedy on Rust today, especially Halyna Hutchins and her family."
A friend of Hutchins' and camerawoman, Elle Schneider, wrote on Twitter, “Sick and devastated to hear that my friend and rock star camerawoman Halyna Hutchins was killed on the set in New Mexico today. I have no words to describe this tragedy I want your family to find some sort of peace between this terrible, terrible loss.
"Halyna was filming Western RUST when she died," continued Schneider. "Cinematographers have historically been kept away from genre film, and it seems particularly cruel that one of the breakthrough emerging stars cut her life short for the kind of project we fought for."
"Survive The Game" director James Cullen Bressack tweeted, "I will never use anything other than airsoft and rubber guns in my films again. That should never have happened. Halyna, you were a gem. That sucks. #HalynaHutchins. "
The official report from Brandon Lee, son of Bruce Lee, also paid tribute. Brandon Lee was killed on the set of "The Crow" in 1993 after a bullet stuck in the barrel of a propeller pistol was ejected from an empty cartridge.
Brandon's sister, Shannon, who runs the account, wrote: “Our hearts go out to the family of Halyna Hutchins and Joel Souza and everyone involved in the 'Rust' incident. No one should ever be killed by a gun on a movie set.
