Homeschooling? Walmart + takes one thing off your plate. (Photo: Getty)
Being a mother during the pandemic was ... challenging. I've grappled with a lot of decisions - some were easy and some were less. A difficult decision was deciding whether or not to send my son to a personal kindergarten. I wasn't entirely happy with the idea, but distance learning was out of the question - I knew my kid couldn't stare at a computer all day - he just walked away and started playing in his room.
After weighing the pros and cons - many, many times - I decided to go to school. Spoiler alert: this is harder than I thought!
I'm not going to gloss it over - homeschooling feels like a nightmarish long day to me, punctuated by fleeting moments of joy. I teach my child to read while making endless amounts of slime. I explain the encore with a pot of Mac n Cheese on the stove when I see my cat go missing the litter box. Snack time is rolling around and I realize we are running out of goodies.
I live in pajamas and my daily workouts switch to GoNoodle (if you don't know what that is, it's probably a good thing). I keep telling myself that I will look back and appreciate this great time with my child. But to be honest, I'm going a little crazy. Anything that makes my life easier lifts my spirits. This is where Walmart + comes in. (Remember when I said some decisions were easy? Signing up for this service falls into that category.) Here's why.

Walmart to the rescue
The difficulty of potentially exposing my child to COVID-19 won't go away with homeschooling. I need to get food, school supplies, and any other household items our family needs. The problem is, I can't leave the house without my child. Why should it be safer to take him to the grocery store than to send him to school?
A friend recently turned me on at Walmart +, the retail giant's new delivery service, and I decided to give it a try. Bottom line, you can get almost anything you need at a reasonable price. I am addicted!
Signing up was easy - a risk-free trial gives you 15 days, but a quick three-question survey will take another two weeks. After your 30 days are up, you'll be billed $ 13 per month or $ 98 per year - it's up to you.
The annual fee is similar to Amazon Prime, but you get access to fresh groceries, perishable items, and other household items at no additional cost. And delivery is the same day! After my son went to bed one night, I clicked, clicked, clicked my way through the page and loved every minute of it. It was so much fun tossing things (snacks! Greens! Craft!) Into my shopping cart. I selected the Delivery tab and selected a delivery window. Emails and text messages kept me updated on the status. And the return was contactless - the parcels arrived at my door so secretly that I didn't even see the delivery person. You can also leave a tip by text link or email.
Honestly, Walmart + keeps my house running smoothly and saves me the fear of taking my child out shopping during a pandemic. I also save money! Here is my final route:
Kegeln Original Chewy Candy Family Size Bag
A rainbow of possibilities. (Photo: Walmart)
Who knew how many science experiments you can do with cones ?! We've watched the colors fade when water is added, and let me tell you - a little candy goes a long way in getting a child in the mood to learn something. And I admit it: I like putting these cones in my mouth (I deserve it!). Walmart + has the best price on the market for these babies too.

Mission Gluten Free Soft Taco Tortillas
This is a wrap! (Photo: Walmart)
My husband is allergic to gluten and he is addicted to Mission Tortillas. Before the pandemic, I had to go to a specific grocery store to find it. It goes through an average of three packs a week - I'm not kidding you. Walmart + delivers them right to my door and the price is right. They actually have a nice selection of gluten free products in general which I was very pleased to see.

Build the ultimate fuzzy kit
Pipe cleaners and pompons for victory. (Photo: Walmart)
I'm constantly looking for projects to tackle during our school day's arts and crafts. This kit contains everything we need to make these cute toilet roll animals that will end up all over the house! Yay! Googly eyes are a big part of our homeschooling curriculum. Thank Walmart +

Marketside organic baby spinach
Popeye had the right idea. (Photo: Walmart)
Smoothies are the only way to get greens into my child's diet. If I don't have spinach in the house, I panic. At $ 4 for 16 ounces of organic spinach, this is a lot, and the spinach is fresh. Walmart + organic range has significantly lower prices than any of my local grocery stores.
Shop it one: Marketside Organic Baby Spinach, 16 oz, $ 4, walmart.com
L’il Critters Kids Immune C.
Free from high fructose corn syrup and other questionable ingredients. (Photo: Walmart)
You can never get enough vitamin C and zinc these days. Boosting my child's immunity is a breeze and he loves them. Although the price is a bit higher than Amazon, these are worth an extra dollar to get with my fresh produce - I love that they don't have any artificial flavors or colors.
Shop it: L’il Critters Kids Immune C plus Zinc and Vitamin D, 190 pieces, $ 11, walmart.com
Calgon Lavender Moisturizing Bath Beads
Finally ... it's mom time. (Photo: Walmart)
Calgon, take me away! Seriously. Walmart + offers these jewels at half the price of most other sellers. I treat myself to a lavender bath twice a week. Everyone needs a little self-care.
