STENY HOYER: According to the rules, all three of us had to agree. Two of us did. The minority leader didn't. House Republicans rejected. However, the unanimous request for approval blocking this hike has been sought by the Democrats and now President Trump. The American people must know for sure that the Democrats are trying to get higher stimulus payments. This is Christmas Eve.
Surely the President of the United States, whether in Mar-a-Lago or anywhere else, should empathize with the pain and suffering and concern and deep fear that the American people are feeling this Christmas Eve. I urge the President to sign the bill we sent him so that we can resume critical aid to small businesses, give rest to tenants, resume expanded unemployment benefits, feed the hungry, and some make sure that The relief that Americans need and that the economy needs is accepted. He must sign this bill to ensure that the government stays open and also serves the American people.
How ironic would it be to shut down the government at a time of pandemic crisis? The time when government services are most needed.
