I Asked Over-40 Women Which Winter Staples They Rely On—Their Answers Are Good

Since winter is on our doorstep and the cold weather is often the most difficult, we have won our fashion friends over 40 again for the much-needed dose of inspiration when we make our way into the next season. We've said it before, and we'll say it again, there's only one thing about this group's seasoned style perspective that proves to be an unlimited source of style inspiration for us. Whether it's the stores they always shop in or how they style their basics, they just get it.
This time around, we had a chat with several of our 40+ favorite influencers, including Renata Jazdzyk, Elaine Davis, and Tennille Murphy, who you may know from other stories we've featured them in. They shared tips that are timeless, chic, and work for everyone (no surprise). We weren't even surprised to see certain pieces loved by everyone (yes, they are that good). So read on for why they rely on the 7 items below, from outerwear to accessories, and of course, see how they wear.
Buffer coats
"NYC winters can be a little brutal at times, so when it's time to stay warm and stylish, it's a puffer coat. You can dress them up or down." - Elaine Davis
Isabel Marant Dalo Jacket ($ 1075)
"Puffer jackets and coats have been my absolute must-have for years, and I can't imagine winter without them! They're easy to style, warm and comfortable. We can't find an amazing range of puffer jackets and coats in stores right now, from classic black or black subtly neutral to very colorful, my favorites are the belted ones - they are so stylish and add extra pizzazz to your winter outfit. "- Renata Jazdzyk
Who Wears What Tie Waist Puffer Jacket ($ 49)
Topshop Lorrcan Puffer Jacket ($ 95)
Layered chunky knitwear
"One of my top winter staples is sweaters. You basically need these for the Danish winter. You can dress them up and down however you like by adding collars, scarves or sweaters. This season I'm very excited about light shades. "- Mette Anderson
Mango knitted braided vest ($ 60)
Frankie Shop Ribbed Turtleneck and Scarf Set ($ 240)
Goodthreads Boucle Shaker Stitch balloon sleeved sweater ($ 29)
"There is nothing more comforting than coarse, soft knitwear. Every year I add a new one to my collection! My winter outfit consists of coarsely knitted and oversized jeans. This year I will buy knitwear with a scarf attached to them (e.g. the Frankie Store) and knitted dresses with matching scarves. "- Jazdzyk
Leather gaiters
"Year after year I take off my vegan leather leggings and am still not tired of wearing them repeatedly. They flatter my figure incredibly, are incredibly comfortable and make me feel chic and together. I love that they are So versatile. For me, shoes are the key to style them year after year: maybe suede over-the-knee boots for a more polished look, slingback kitten heels for a feminine-chic vibe or boots with studded soles for a more edgy, sporty look ... The combinations are endless. "- Tennille Murphy
