My boyfriend, my dog and I lived on a sailboat for over a year. Casey Hawkins
I was living full time on a sailboat but after a year my partner and I decided to live in an apartment instead.
Simple activities like showering and shopping became much more difficult.
I learned a lot on board, for example to appreciate the simple things in life.
In March 2021 my friend Greyhound and I started living aboard a 42ft sailboat. In August 2022 we were back on land and moved into an apartment.
In the years before I came on board I dreamed of our nomadic lifestyle, but after a year of sacrificing hygiene, stability and family time, the wanderlust was gone.
Simple, everyday activities like showering and shopping became complicated ventures. We have spent a lot of time and energy simply maintaining our basic needs.
So ultimately, our decision to go back to shore was the result of these challenges, which were wearing me down physically and emotionally.
Limited water resulted in limited showers
Although I consider myself low maintenance, life on the boat has pushed my hygiene needs to the limit.

When sailing, especially to remote locations, we had a limited amount of water to transport. So we minimized showering to conserve it and instead took "salt water baths" in the sea.
Since soap doesn't lather that well in the sea and salt sticks to skin and hair, I could never really feel clean.
I went without a freshwater shower for up to a month, and the thick layer of salt and grease in my hair made me uncomfortable and insecure.
I longed to establish a daily routine
Grocery shopping could be a hassle. Casey Hawkins
Finding the cheapest grocery store and a nice walking route was part of the adventure at first, but constantly feeling unfamiliar with our location became tiring. I was relieved when we stayed in one place for a week or more so I could establish a routine.

And instead of looking forward to our next destination, each departure made me feel sad because I left that newfound familiarity behind.
Traveling every few days empowered me to become more adaptable, but I continued to fear for access to the resources we needed.
Homesickness was harder than I expected
I missed my family and friends. Casey Hawkins
I always knew that leaving my friends and family would be a challenge, but I was amazed at how sudden waves of homesickness swept over me.
While getting ice cream I wanted to share it with my dessert loving nieces. And I longed to be with my best friend as I tried local hot sauces.

After missing out on a year full of birthdays and holidays, I now take every opportunity to create memories with the people I love.
I still learned a lot, and the experience was worth the challenges
Life on a sailboat has helped me appreciate the simple things in life.
Since moving into my apartment, showers are easily accessible and groceries are easy to obtain and store.
I'm grateful to carry memories of beautiful beaches and different cultures, but I'm also looking forward to our next chapter on land.
