Balance in our society and in our life is very important. We need a balanced diet to be healthy. We hear about the work-life balance in our workplaces. Our democracy is based on the balance of power between the three branches of our government. I also believe in the balance of our two-party system. I know that in other countries there are three or even more political parties, but I still think that in our democracy the two-party system works better.
Which brings me to what I believe to be the greatest threat to our two-party system, Donald Trump. Some MAGA supporters dub his third run for the presidency "Trump 2024 - The Revenge Tour." I'm afraid that's exactly his goal. His need for admiration and his anger and vengeance against those who despised him is well known to both his supporters and critics. I know that in the next 18 months leading up to the Republican primary, he will not live up to Ronald Reagan's eleventh commandment, "Thou shalt not speak ill of another Republican." I think the reason is because he doesn't care about the GOP, our country, or anything but himself.
The GOP didn't turn on him when he politicized the pandemic, or when he started a riot, or even when he removed top-secret documents. They're starting to spin now because he turned the "red wave" into a trickle. He is a threat to their power, to the balance that falls to the Democrats. He takes the names of those who have turned against him. The next 18 months will certainly be the revenge tour, but against the Republicans. He will most likely be the GOP nominee. If not, there is speculation that he could start his own third party. Either way, a bloody primary season — and the vitriol it spits out — will leave a bad taste in voters' mouths and likely result in an almost certain Democratic victory. I don't want the GOP to self-destruct, but I fear it will.

That balances out again. I believe in the balance of our two-party system. Balance creates compromise and compromise brings closure. I believe every informed citizen has both conservative and liberal views and we should all fight for that. Work on the immigration problem, crime in our cities, inflation, the high cost of higher education, repairing our roads and bridges, and the many other problems we face. This should start with respectful civil discussion and not the tribalism and anger that is now afoot. We can do this, I have faith in the American people and their desire for balance.
