Ina Garten Says You Need to Replace This Kitchen Tool Every Year

While Ina Garten is promoting her new and twelfth (!) Cookbook Modern Comfort Food, she utters culinary truths some of which have enlightened us (did you know that the host of Barefoot Contessa puts everything in the dishwasher, including her loved ones - and expensive - Wüsthof knives in the dishwasher?) and others that have put us chefs to shame. OK, only one thing only attacked us slightly - and honestly shocked us - and it has to do with a kitchen tool that you've probably never replaced since you bought it: your vegetable peeler.
In a recent interview with Food & Wine, Garten showed that you should replace your vegetable peelers and peelers not just once, but as often as once a year.
"Vegetable peelers get rusty, boring, and very cheap. So you can just throw them away and buy new ones," says Garten. "I do this every now and then."
Basically, as soon as the blade goes, the whole peeler goes with it. So if you don't use the peeler often and keep it clean, dry and safe, you can probably wait a little longer than a year before replacing it.
Fortunately, peelers are inexpensive - and to our surprise, there are tons of highly rated peelers to choose from.
The most popular vegetable peeler on Amazon and the best vegetable peeler on Business Insider this year is the three-pack from Kuhn Rickon.
And if you haven't already, be sure to get your cookbook:

The second most popular peeler on Amazon? Precision Kitchenware's ultra-hot dual julienne and vegetable peeler made of stainless steel. It even comes with a cleaning brush and blade guard.
For a more ergonomic peeler, choose the Good Grips Swivel Peeler from OXO. It has a near-perfect rating for Bed Bath & Beyond.
Or can you make the peeling process a lot easier and pick up this rotating electric peeler at Walmart?
The popular Microplane Zester from Bed Bath & Beyond is available in different colors. (We like turquoise.)
BRB - we too have to dig up our old peeler and go shopping, stat.
