On January 3, 2020, the Trump administration carried out a drone attack near Baghdad International Airport that killed General Qassam Soleimani, the most powerful Iranian military commander. Soleimani is said to have planned upcoming attacks against American diplomats and military personnel. Previous governments considered taking this bold move, but decided against the Soleimani assassination because of the risk of escalation.
