Iran scores twice in added time to earn decisive win over Wales originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston
It was sometimes difficult to score goals in Qatar, but Iran scored twice after 98 minutes against Wales.
Roozbeh Cheshmi broke a stalemate eight minutes after added time in the second half and Ramin Rezaeian added another goal three minutes later to give Iran an impressive 2-0 win at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium on Friday.
Iran jumped to second place in Group B with three points. Wales, meanwhile, are stuck at one point after drawing the US men's national team on Monday.
Iran almost scored the goal early in the second half. Sardar Azmoun hit the right post with a shot in the 51st minute and seconds later, Ali Gholizadeh shot wide of Welsh goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, just the left post.
Wales went down to 10 men in the 86th minute after Hennessey collided with Iran's Mehdi Taremi. VAR upgraded an initial yellow card to red, forcing Hennessey and Aaron Ramsey out of the game in place of backup goalkeeper Danny Ward. The red card was the first awarded at the 2022 World Cup.
Mehdi Torabi tested Ward almost immediately, but his shot from just outside the box zoomed wide of the right post to tie the game 0-0 in the 88th minute. Nine minutes of stoppage time were added and Iran used their man advantage to secure the win.
The USMNT and England will face off at 2pm. ET are looking to climb up Group B on Friday.
Iran will conclude the group game with a game against the USMNT, while Wales still have to play England. Both games start at 2 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
