James Van Der Beek's kids have discovered his most enduring legacy — his ugly crying Dawson's Creek meme.
The 45-year-old actor and father of six said in a recent interview that his eldest daughter Olivia, 12, recently used the meme against him while they exchanged online messages.

He told People: "For a bit of online learning, we got them iPads and they spotted memes straight away. That's how it started, my eldest sent me a meme of mine."
Van Der Beek said he responded with a "I'm dancing or something" meme, only for her to hit him where it hurts with the famous GIF of him from his days as Dawson Leery in Dawson's Creek.
"She hit me with the scream face right away," he said. "I thought, 'This is aggressive.'"
The memorable on-screen moment stems from the season 3 finale of the WB teen drama, in which Van Der Beek's protagonist bursts into tears after an emotional conversation with his longtime romantic partner Joey (Katie Holmes) over their mutual boyfriend Pacey is in love (Joshua Jackson).

Although the episode aired in 2000, before memes really took off, in recent years the scene has been rediscovered by a new generation of fans who can't help but find some humor in Dawson's sadness.
Elsewhere in the interview, the actor shared that his son Joshua, 10, has grown so used to his father's fame that he can "sniff out" when others recognize him.
He said: "My son can sniff when we walk into a restaurant and someone recognizes me - a skill that took me about 20 years to learn. And he just gets it, 'Daddy, those ladies at the table right now? You know it .' It's interesting."
Van Der Beek added that he's had many conversations with his children - including Annabel, 8, Emilia, 6, Gwendolyn, 4, and Jeremiah, 1 - about fame. He said he tries to be "really honest about all my experiences with it, about what it means and what it doesn't".
"It's a cool thing to make someone smile through a really simple social interaction, and really that's pretty much all it is when you're on the go," he explained. "It was an interesting thing to navigate but I think all of them, I think they just sort of get it."
