Jamie Lynn Spears planned to donate the proceeds of her upcoming book to a mental health nonprofit - and was surprised this week after the organization publicly declined the promised donation.
A source tells PEOPLE that Spears, 30, was hurt by This Is My Brave's decision to decline all donations from the actress who announced her book Things I Should Have Said earlier this month.
"Jamie Lynn was completely taken by surprise when they went publicly. The organization was recommended and reviewed and knew we were donating, but they were overwhelmed," says the source. "Unfortunately, they say that one person's mental health problems are more important and more important than those of another mission to support all voices."

In a statement shared on Instagram Monday, This Is My Brave wrote that it would "take action" in response to public outcry over the donation. Spears was publicly criticized when her sister Britney Spears struggled to end her 13-year conservatory career.
"We hear you. This Is My Brave was recently recommended to benefit the proceeds of the upcoming Jamie Lynn Spears book. We made a decision to decline the offer to receive income from the book sales," the organization wrote. “We heard you. We take action.
The insider says the incident was "very worrying" to Spears, who has long been connected to her sister both professionally and personally.
"Jamie Lynn has suffered abuse in her life too and people don't understand that - she has her own things that she has been through," says the source. "She can't help being Britney's little sister. Her life is only talked about in relation to her family, although she has also spent the better half of her life dealing with mental health problems. That only adds to the whole trauma - her." History doesn't matter. "

The alum from Zoey 101 said she would talk about her own mental health issues in her book, which would be her way of "sharing my truth the right way".
"I've believed all my life that I have to pretend I was perfect even if I wasn't, so this is my first time opening up about my own mental health because this process challenged me to be painful to have to be honest with myself and face a lot of hard things that I normally would have just glossed over like I was taught, "she wrote on Instagram earlier this month.

She said at the time that a portion of the proceeds from the book would go to This Is My Brave because “I know how scary it can be to share personal struggles, especially when you feel like you don't have the support or safe space have to do it like that. "
"They do a great job supporting and encouraging people to boldly share their experiences," she wrote. "Finally, I want you all to know, YOU are important, YOUR story is important, YOU are enough and never let this world convince you otherwise."
Things I Should Have Said is about her experience growing up in a famous family and what it was like to become a teenage mom. (She shares daughter Maddie, 13, with ex Casey Aldridge and is the mother of Ivey Joan, 3, with husband Jamie Watson.)

The drama of the book comes at a central point for the Spears family. In September, Jamie Spears was suspended as Britney's estate curator, and a judge will decide on November 12 whether Britney should be removed from her curatorial position.
Jamie Lynn Spears spoke publicly about the situation in June and said in several videos on her Instagram story that she has her sister and "will always support".
