Denzel Washington and Rami Malek team up to hunt down a dangerous killer in The Little Things.
PEOPLE has an exclusive first look at the upcoming psychological thriller in which Assistant Sheriff Joe "Deke" Deacon of Kern County, Washington and Malek's Sergeant Jim Baxter try to find the man responsible for several Los Angeles murders.
The film will be shown in select theaters and on HBO Max on January 29, 2021.
The little things follow when Washington's Deke is sent to LA on a simple evidence-gathering mission. However, the deputy sheriff becomes embroiled in a homicide investigation led by Maleks Baxter, who unofficially appoints Deke to assist. As the investigation emerges more and more from Dee's past, the two must work together as secrets are uncovered that could threaten more than the case.
Details about Leto's role have been kept under wraps, but the actor is excited for fans to discover the secret.
"It's a classic thriller with a surprise ending that is full of suspense and mystery. I think people are going to have a blast watching little things. It takes you on a ride," Leto tells PEOPLE.
"Working with two Oscar winners was a dream," he adds. "Denzel Washington is my Brando. He is an absolute legend and a force of nature. Rami is remarkable. One of my favorite actors and both were an absolute pleasure."

Director John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side) is also excited for fans to immerse themselves in the story he wrote 28 years ago.
"I wrote The Little Things in 1992, 1993, so it's been with me for a long time," he tells PEOPLE. "It's a thriller with cops chasing a murderer, but unlike most other genres, instead of coming together in act three, things resolve themselves. I think moviegoers will get the unexpected twists and turns of story, subject matter, as well as plot." and of course appreciate the good performances of Denzel, Rami and Jared as well as the rest of the cast. "
The director is now happier than ever that his film finally hits the big screen.
"Like I said, this film took a long time - 28 years since I made it up," he says. "It's been done almost two or three times in the past. I can honestly say I'm glad it hasn't happened yet because this cast is absolutely perfect for the story I wanted to tell. These three actors are all incredibly talented, and they all have different approaches to work. Although their work habits were different, they respected each other as people and artists and were a good match. "
The Little Things will be released on January 29, 2021 in select theaters and on HBO Max.
