Jennifer Lopez Recalls Having to "Convince" Producers to Cast Her in The Wedding Planner
It's hard to imagine a world where Jennifer Lopez didn't star in The Wedding Planner.
At the time, the romantic comedy starring the singer and Matthew McConaughey was a hit and opened at # 1 on the box office.
The premiere also coincided with the release of J. Los second album J.Lo, a chart topper in its own right.
Speaking to her business partner and agent Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas about Lifetime's Varietys Power of Women Conversations, Jennifer says none of this would have happened if she hadn't convinced director Adam Shankman to take a risk.
She explains that prior to starring in The Wedding Planner, her experience consisted of what she describes as "the maid, the Rosie Perez-type roles, the dishwasher, that this, that that".
Jennifer continues, "I just had to break out and convince someone to get into the first romantic comedy I think was The Wedding Planner."

How she got the role was easy, Jennifer explains. "I was, as you said, pretty hot at the time and you were my agent and you asked for a certain price that you thought was well deserved and that fell back on us," she said. "Then [Adam] came over to one of my plate signatures and he said give her what she wants."

Share the importance of this moment in her career, singer "Jenny From the Block" explains, "The idea that someone like me from my background who was a woman could get that kind of price in this industry. It was a big deal . "
She then played in other Romcoms, including Maid in Manhattan, Gigli, Monster in Law and Shall We Dance.
Jennifer's impressive career in both the music and film industries is part of the reason she won the People's Icon Award at E 2020! People's Choice Awards.
E! News announced the award in September, describing how the star consistently broke barriers for women. "Jennifer Lopez has unmatched global appeal and has given us some of the most iconic and memorable appearances of all time in more than two decades," said Jen Neal, general manager of E! News, Live Events & Lifestyle Digital, said in a statement on Sept. 30. "To pave the way for artists around the world and single-handedly increase Latinx representation in music, film, television and fashion, we are honoring Jennifer Lopez with the 2020 Folk Icon."
