Jim Harbaugh explains 'third base' comment toward Ryan Day before Ohio State vs. Michigan

After Michigan Football clinched a 42-27 win over Ohio State last season, Jim Harbaugh urged the Wolverines to "continue with a humble heart," saying there were things his team did over the course of the year spurred on in 2021.
Along with that came commentary that spurred Ohio State on for the past season.
"Sometimes people stand on third base and think they hit a triple, but they didn't," Harbaugh said, a comment apparently aimed at Ohio State coach Ryan Day about Urban's program to take over Meyer.

What did Jim Harbaugh's "Third Base" comment about Ryan Day actually mean?
The Michigan coach explained himself on Tuesday morning's radio show "Stoney and Jansen" on Detroit radio station WXYT-FM 97.1 The Ticket.
"It was definitely a backlash from me to the 'they're going to hang 100 on us' comment and stuff like that," Harbaugh said. “A bit like a Sugar Ray Robinson.
Michigan's Jim Harbaugh (left) and Ohio's Ryan Day haven't always had the friendliest relationship.
"Fact is, I think Ryan Day is a great coach," continued Harbaugh. "I think he's a great football coach. To be honest, that's how I feel. You see that with his team week after week. He's the best coach there is in football."

When asked about Harbaugh's comment in Day's Tuesday news conference, the Ohio State coach declined.
"Maybe there's another time for that," Day said. "But like I said, there are certain things you listen to and certain things you don't listen to. Any time you're in a high profile game where a lot is happening, a lot of things are said. But there is a time and place to talk about it, and it's not now.
In August 2020, it was reported that Day told his team he wanted to hang 100 on Michigan after getting into a disagreement with Harbaugh on a conference call with other Big Ten coaches, which Day later declined to comment when asked.
Harbaugh declined to elaborate when asked about his post-game quote at Big Ten football media days, or when asked about it during his Ohio State press conference in the context of "kindhearted rivalry talk."

"I think so," Harbaugh said. "It's kind of irrelevant what I think. I think that's irrelevant."
