Jimmy Garoppolo benched after horrible first half for 49ers in his return from injury
The San Francisco 49ers wanted Jimmy Garoppolo back, especially after Nick Mullens struggled last week.
Maybe the 49ers should have waited another week.
Absent from two games with a severe ankle sprain, Garoppolo had a terrible first half for San Francisco when he fell 7-30 against the Miami Dolphins. Garoppolo threw a few interceptions, got a pass rating of 15.7, and was awarded to C.J. Beathard pulled.
Garoppolo looked either rusty, still injured, or both in the first half. He failed on many passes and could easily have more than the two interceptions he had in half. Garoppolo practically gave the Dolphins six points at the end of the first half, with two interceptions in San Francisco in the last two minutes before half.
After the second interception, coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to Garoppolo on the sideline and either made the change then or at halftime.
It was a difficult start to the season for the 49ers. The defending NFC champions came up with a 2-2 record in Week 5 after falling to 500 against the Philadelphia Eagles last week. They have sustained many injuries, including one to their quarterback. Getting Garoppolo back seemed to fix some of their problems.
Instead, Garoppolo's return dropped San Francisco down a huge hole at halftime.
