Joe Rogan wonders if Islam Makhachev can handle the speed of Alexander Volkanovski.
Lightweight champion Makhachev (23-1 MMA, 12-1 UFC) will make his first title defense against Volkanovski (25-1 MMA, 12-0 UFC) in the UFC 284 headliner on February 11 at the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia. deny. The event will air on pay-per-view after the prelims are expected on ESPN and ESPN+.
Volkanovski moves up a weight class to take on the dominant grappler Makhachev, but Rogan thinks his speed could play a part.
"Has Islam seen anyone who can move as fast as Volkanovski?" said Rogan in a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience with guest Sean O'Malley. "What if he starts catching him? What if he catches his feet a couple of times and if he can avoid a takedown? I mean, you're probably dealing with a much faster guy. (Makhachev has) probably never fought anyone that fast.”
However, when discussing the matchup with O'Malley, Rogan expressed some concerns about Volkanovski's size.
"Do you think he's big enough to go up against a guy like Islam, who's a really big 55?" said Rogan. “Islam is great. I don't know what he's cutting, but he has the perfect physique for this weight class. He's very, very slim. He makes the weight, and he's obviously a lot taller when he's competing. He doesn't look like a 55 pound guy at all.
“The thing is grappling. If you look at Volkanovski he has really good takedown defense and he can knock out guys. He jerked off Max Holloway a few times, but he's not the greatest even at 45."
