Johnny Depp Fans’ Efforts To Have Amber Heard Axed From ‘Aquaman 2’ Carried No Water, Says Producer

A sequel to Aquaman without Amber Heard was never an option.
Today on Deadline Hero Nation's podcast, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom producer Peter Safran was asked if Johnny Depp fans' social media campaign for the removal of Amber Heard from the DC sequel would ever affect production and had her casting decisions.

"I don't think we'll ever respond to mere pressure from fans," said Safran, whose James Gunn The Suicide Squad movie hits theaters on August 6 and HBO Max.
"You have to do your best for the film," Safran continued. “We thought if it was James Wan and Jason Momoa it should be Amber Heard. It really was. "
“You don't know what's going on in the Twitter verse, but that doesn't mean you have to respond to it or view it as the gospel or do what you want,” said Safran. “You have to do the right thing for the movie, and that's where we really landed. "
On June 28, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom filmmaker James Wan announced on Instagram that production was underway for the sequel to the all-time record-breaking DC film, grossing $ 1.1 billion. This rekindled the # JusticeForJohnnyDepp crew on Twitter. Demand for Heard's release from Aquaman 2 by Depp fans began after the formerly married duo made explosive domestic violence allegations against The Sun in the UK libel trial of the Curse of the Caribbean Stars. The court dismissed Depp's lawsuit and ruled in favor of The Sun's allegations against the actor.
According to The Sun's verdict, Warner Bros. Depp dropped out of the third Fantastic Beasts film, with Mads Mikkelsen playing the role of the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald.
In a November interview with EW, Heard addressed the protests of Depp fans against her, saying, “Paid rumors and paid social media campaigns don't dictate [casting decisions] because they have no basis in reality ... just the fans actually did Aquaman and passed Aquaman 2. I'm looking forward to starting next year. "
The former Rum Diary co-stars and the couple are embroiled in further litigation on this side of the Atlantic in a $ 50 million defamation lawsuit launched by Depp in 2019. Heard, who threw back her ex-husband on a $ 100 million counterclaim, and Depp are due to go to trial next April.
