Johnny Depp sent a Christmas message to fans reflecting on a year that "was so difficult for so many".
"This year has been so difficult for so many," wrote the 57-year-old actor. "To a better time. Happy Holidays to all of you! My love and respect to you all. Forever, JD." The message was accompanied by a photo of Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan (famous for the gross Christmas classic "Fairytale of New York") , recorded on the set of Crock of Gold, a documentary about the hard-living rocker that Depp produced.
Asia Argento, Stray Cats drummer Slim Jim Phantom and singer Patti Smith responded to the Pirates of the Caribbean star's post, among other things, following the loss of his libel suit in a UK court and his subsequent exit from the Fantastic Beasts franchise took place.
"We are yours forever," wrote Smith.
Aside from a post last month promoting the Crock of Gold release, Depp's last social media statement was his November 6th open letter telling fans that Warner Bros. had asked him to stepping down from his role as Grindelwald in the Harry Potter spin-off series - in which Mads Mikkelsen was just being cast as his replacement - after what he called the "surreal judgment" of the British court.
The actor had sued News Group Newspapers (NGN), owner of British tabloid The Sun, and tabloid editor-in-chief Dan Wootton over a 2018 article that referred to "overwhelming evidence" he had gained during their relationship had attacked with ex-wife Amber Heard. Depp has denied the actress's allegations of domestic abuse, but the judge in his trial ruled against him, claiming it was not defamatory for the newspaper to call him a "bully".
Just last week, Depp's lawyer submitted new documents to the appeals court asking for a new trial. He noted the "uncritical acceptance" of Heard's testimony by the original judiciary and insisted that her famous client "had not received a fair trial".
"This was a very public judgment passed by a single judge that made devastating findings on extremely serious crimes that had far-reaching implications for the general public, particularly victims or wrongly accused of alleged domestic abuse," wrote Depps Lawyer David Sherborne.
