Jon Stewart pushes lab leak theory to skeptical Stephen Colbert: 'The disease is the same name as the lab!'
The Late Show With Stephen Colbert made its triumphant return to the Ed Sullivan Theater on Monday in front of a packed, fully vaccinated audience, welcoming former Daily Show host Jon Stewart as its first guest at the legendary theater in 15 months. While it made sense to discuss the pandemic that kept the theater empty all along, Colbert seemed surprised when Stewart revealed that he believes COVID-19 came from a laboratory in Wuhan, China, a popular topic of conversation in conservative media.
"I think we owe a great debt to science," said Stewart. "Science has in many ways helped alleviate the suffering of this pandemic, which science most likely caused."
"Do you think this was made in a lab?" asked Colbert. "A chance?" answered Stewart. “There is a novel respiratory coronavirus overtaking Wuhan, China, what are we doing? Oh, do you know who we could ask? The Wuhan Novel Respiratory Coronavirus Laboratory. The disease has the same name as the laboratory! That's just a little too strange! "
Stewart repeated this mindset several times throughout the interview.
Chinese authorities have long rejected the laboratory leak theory and stand by the claim that the coronavirus originated from bats. But Stewart won't buy it.
"Coronavirus is loose in Wuhan, how did that happen?" asked Stewart. “Maybe a bat flew into a turkey sewer and then it sneezed into my chili and now we all have coronavirus. Come on."
But Colbert pushed back and offered a different point of view.
"It could be that they have the laboratory in Wuhan to study the novel coronavirus diseases," said Colbert, "because there are many novel coronavirus diseases in Wuhan because of the bat population."
Stewart later spoke about scientists and said they just don't know when to stop. In fact, Stewart believes that scientists will be responsible for the end of mankind.
"That's how I believe the world ends," said Stewart. "I'm telling you that sincerely ... the world is going to end, the last words a man utters are in a laboratory somewhere, a guy says, 'Huh huh, it worked!" "
Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs at 11:35 pm on weekdays. on CBS.
