Judas Priest front man Rob Halford has always advocated the place of heavy metal in pop culture. So it was no surprise that almost all of his top 10 songs were certified headbangers when the singer, known to his fans as "Metal God", his voice for Rolling Stone's new 500 Greatest Songs of All Time rankings submitted. Halford was one of more than 250 artists, journalists and industry representatives to be added to the new list.
He recently met with Rolling Stone to break down his picks and has praised Ozzy Osbourne, Ronnie James Dio and Motorhead's Lemmy Kilmister, among others. Many of his picks reflect his pick for his top 10 favorite albums, which he sent to Rolling Stone last year when we re-rated the 500 best albums of all time.

With regard to his number one song, Black Sabbath's "Paranoid," Halford praised the pioneering spirit of the melody. "For me, it was one of those groundbreaking moments we have in music because it spawned and spawned a genre and style of music that lit the world," he said. "'Paranoid" just took off like a heavy metal rocket. "
Halford's other favorite songs include Slayer's “Angel of Death”, Dio's “Holy Diver”, Metallica's “Ride the Lightning” and Motörhead's “Ace of Spades”. His only non-metal selection was David Bowie's "Space Oddity". "I saw the Ziggy Stardust [tour] in the UK in Wolverhampton and I'm so excited I can remember taking him on stage and doing the whole Ziggy Stardust album," he says. "Out of all the people we talked about, Bowie as a musician ... man, there is no one like him."
Halford and Judas Priest are currently touring the US to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Next month they will release a 42-CD box set, 50 Heavy Metal Years of Music, which will contain 13 discs of previously unreleased material.
