Just another shallow celebrity couple? No, Kim and Kanye were a sophisticated creative powerhouse

When I think of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's marriage, I think of their wedding photo. The one who went viral, the one who sparked an international and long-lasting fascination with flower walls: he wears a black tuxedo, she wears white lace, and the couple kiss surrounded by white flowers bathed in golden light. It was May 24th, 2014 and the beginning of the most talked about and bombastic pairing of modern celebrities.
Now the marriage seems to be over. Kardashian has recruited Laura Wasser, the A-list attorney, who walked the star through their two previous breakups and filed for divorce. The news follows a tweet West posted in July claiming he had "tried to get a divorce" since November 2018. The couple reportedly spent Christmas thousands of miles apart: Kardashian with her family in California, West, on his Wyoming ranch. A source told People magazine in December that "the two lived separate lives."
Their association was never averse to criticism. West is an undeniably talented and amazing rapper fashion mogul, but he is also prone to statements about extreme self-aggrandizement, social media rampage, and controversial political stunts. A shrewd business woman by now, Kardashian will forever be known for more humble beginnings: she starred in a sex video, the stylist of Paris Hilton, and the most famous member of that reality juggernaut, Keeping Up With The Kardashians.
Cynics have never fought to destroy their relationship: Kim has fame but no credibility; Kanye has talent but still benefits from her starlight. Together they became billionaires, their marriage a perfect symbol of the excess and vanity that epitomize what it is like to be famous in the Instagram era. But while the masses will show up to point out that they were right all along, those smug twos who preached about love and blessings were never really committed! - You will be missing something valuable and true: The couple not only got the best out of each other, but also changed our cultural landscape for the better.
Their love story has never been a big secret. Those willing to search the millions of Google results for "Kim Kardashian and Kanye West" can learn everything: when they met (2003: he thought their name was "Kim Kardijon"), when they became friends (2008: West asked her to leave her then boyfriend in his verse about a Keri Hilson single for him when they met (2012: she wore a Givenchy feather jacket and lederhosen) where they had fathered their first child (in Florence “among the masterpieces of the Renaissance”, so West) ... I could go on.

We know all of this because their relationship became their work. West painted his affection for the (then married) Kardashian in his music ("And I admit I fell in love with Kim / About the same time she fell in love with him," he tapped in Cold (Theraflu)) in 2012). She invited him to Keeping Up With the Kardashians in 2010 and they celebrated their wedding by being on the cover of American Vogue in 2014. For two stars who have always made their everyday lives the reason for their fame, business and pleasure have never known a separation.
Since 2012, the career paths of both companies have not only increased rapidly, but have also dominated new industries. While many aging rappers are turning to other streams of income - usually luxury liquor but also technology and media platforms - West has never been shy about tackling the fashion world, despite the often-mocked ridicule. According to Forbes last summer, the vast majority of West's $ 3 billion net worth came from Yeezy, its fashion brand. When West made his wife his muse, he had a ready-made paparazzi magnet for his new creative venture.
In doing so, West has gilded his wife's reputation. There were rumors that Anna Wintour had denied the reality TV star a ticket to the Met Gala for years. (Her 2013 appearance, heavily pregnant and in skin-tight, flowery Givenchy, was reportedly due to the fact that she was the plus of West that occurred.) By 2015, Wintour provided advice on naming the Kardashian West firstborn in the north. Together, the couple helped usher in a new look, emulating Kardashian-West's famous hourglass figure in the media. "My wife," West told Time Magazine in 2016, "is the face of fashion change, where designers who literally wouldn't let her sit in shows are now making entire collections based on their shape."

What did West get for it? Patience, persistence and, crucially, an oar to guide him through his known mental health problems. While it looks like very little of the Kardashian West household is being kept behind the scenes, an unusually sober series of posts appeared on Kardashian's social channels last summer after her husband's another online outbreak took place. "I understand that Kanye has been criticized for being a public figure and his actions can sometimes evoke strong opinions and emotions," she wrote.
"He's a brilliant but complicated person who, alongside the pressures of being an artist and black, has experienced the painful loss of his mother and has to deal with the pressure and isolation that his bipolar disorder exacerbates." Suddenly a new door was opened to this apparently familiar home: a wife and mother of four young children trying to keep a family afloat.
There have been many times that Kardashian-West Fortress has justified the overt contempt so often directed at it. Specifically, for example, there was the 2016 Taylor Swift incident, which was about whether or not Swift knew Kanye wrote a text about the couple who may be having sex. It had a big impact on the pop star's career, drawing both of the Kardashian West into a public feud that West had with her since 2009. Four years later, it turned out that Swift was right all along.

But it is precisely this terrifying teamwork that will ossify Kim and Kanye's marriage, as short-lived as it may be, as something of cultural significance. A few weeks ago, Kardashian-West revealed a homemade birthday card that West gave her on her 30th birthday in 2010. It contained a poem that was folded into his landmark album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, which was released later that year. "He made the poem he wrote for me a song," as she posted on Instagram. For so long it was too easy for people to dismiss a real creative partnership as a fraud.
As with many divorced couples, one of the many things that the couple's lawyers need to talk about is the house. Unlike many divorced couples, however, the Kardashian-West house is a strange and strong building of beauty recognized by Architectural Digest. Thanks to the Belgian designer Axel Vervoordt, it's monastic in its minimalism. The strange sculptures they bring for Christmas have been ridiculed by the media, and West sold his Maybach to buy a sofa, but the two have always talked about it as a quiet retreat - presumably from the flashing cameras that 190 million Instagram followers have and everything else.
I'm looking at photos of this house, of them in it, and I have a feeling that I'll be looking at those photos for years to come. In books with coffee tables and in articles, in architecture magazines and biographies. It's easy now to make fun of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West: This was a married couple who gave each other shares in Disney for Christmas. In revolutionizing the worlds of music, art, fashion and celebrity, "Kim and Kanye" left a legacy that we are probably not fully aware of.
