Justin Bieber Explained Why His Marriage Had a "Lack of Trust"

After two weddings, a documentary, and loads of paparazzi photos showing them hand in hand, it's easy to imagine Justin Bieber and his wife Hailey Baldwin living in a fantasy of marital bliss. In a recent interview with GQ, Bieber stated that all assumptions about an easy marriage were completely wrong, noting that the first year together was "really tough" and citing a "lack of trust" for the rocky beginning.
Bieber and Baldwin were married in a New York City courthouse in September 2018 before holding a major ceremony in South Carolina a year later. But he did realize he had just been through a period of drugs, drinking, and public scandal before the wedding, so he didn't trust himself to fully open up and be himself.
"The first year of marriage was really tough because there was a lot of trauma stuff," he said. "There was just a lack of trust. There were all of these things that you don't want to admit to the person you're with because it's scary. You don't want to scare them off by saying, 'I'm scared. '"

Bieber credits his wife and faith for keeping him stable and focused. Before meeting Baldwin, he said that he knew he wanted to get married and have children, but also feels that the two of them have enough time to get around to it.
"It's nice that we can look forward to it. I never had that in my life that I could look forward to," he said. "My private life was unstable. My private life did not exist. I had no significant other. I had no one to love. I had no one to pour into. But now I have."

Bieber concluded by saying that he sees this period of self-doubt as an opportunity for growth. He wanted to talk about it so that others could see it too.
“I don't want to let my shame on my past determine what I can do for people now. A lot of people let their past complain and they never do what they want to do because they think they do . " aren't good enough, "he said." But I'm just saying, 'I've done some stupid things. That's okay. I am still available. I am still available to help. And I'm still worth helping. '"
