Kamala Harris Is First Sitting VP To Take Part In Pride Event

Vice President Kamala Harris attended the Capitol Pride Walk and rally over the weekend with her husband Doug Emhoff
Vice President Kamala Harris had a great surprise for those attending the Capitol Pride Walk and rally in Washington, DC on Saturday, June 12, 2021. She attended the city's Pride March and became the first incumbent Vice President to pass a Proud Event.
Harris and the second gentleman, husband Doug Emhoff, went about a block, waving to the crowd and talking to the people around them. During their brief appearance, Harris spoke about the Equality Act and the importance of its consent to advance LGBTQ + rights. “We need to make sure that our transgender community and our youth are all protected. We still need protection around employment and housing, ”she said. "There is still so much to do and I know we are committed."

The Biden / Harris government has pushed LGBTQ + rights as a top priority since taking office.
Immediately, Biden restored transgender health protection and lifted former President Donald Trump's ban on transgender people from joining the military. One of the first orders from Biden called for an end to discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation.

"Children should be able to learn without having to worry about whether they will be denied access to the toilet, changing room or school sport," says the order. "Adults should be able to make a living and pursue a calling knowing that they will not be fired, demoted, or mistreated for going home or because their clothes do not conform to gender stereotypes."
Both Harris and Emhoff wore t-shirts that read "LOVE IS LOVE" and "Love first" in a rainbow of colors. Harris paired hers with a light pink blazer. Of course, her surprising appearance for her secret service protection in such a large crowd could not have been easy. Many on Twitter praised the Secret Service guy who tried to fit into a situation they might not be fully prepared for:
The vice president also recently watched the fifth anniversary of the shooting at Pulse Nightclub. She paid tribute to the 49 people who were murdered at the Orlando Gay Club on June 12, 2016.
"Five years ago, 49 LGBTQ + people and allies enjoyed an evening at Pulse Nightclub," she wrote on Twitter. “And then they were gone in no time. Today we remember the deceased and their relatives - and we commit ourselves again to build a world without armed violence. "
It's refreshing to have a government that supports and defends the rights of all Americans and advances laws that allow people to live and work and love how they want.
