Karl-Anthony Towns and his Minnesota Timberwolves opened the season on Wednesday with a win over the Detroit Pistons, marking a return to the sport as the NBA tries to contain the spread of the coronavirus.
Unfortunately, Towns is one of the many who is already suffering from the pandemic, losing his mother and six other family members after contracting the virus.
During the game on Wednesday night, the Minnesota Timberwolves Center won a doubles doubles with 22 points and 11 rebounds and awarded him the game ball award. When asked where he plans to place the match ball during a post-game interview with Fox Sports, Towns told Marney Gellner that he would be placing it with his mother.
"I'll put it next to my mother," he said. "I'm just glad I got this for her. I told her I wanted to bring her this win and her this ball. I was just glad I made it."
Cities continued to draw attention to the emotional impact of the loss of his mother, Jacqueline Towns, who passed away on April 13.
"You know what? I don't even recognize most of my other games and years I've played and how I felt then," Towns told reporters, according to The Athletic's Jon Krawczynski. "If I can be honest with you for a second, I mean I don't really remember or really care. I just understand what happened from April 13th."
Jacqueline was hospitalized for health complications after contracting the coronavirus. Cities later had to make the difficult decision of removing them from life support.
"Because you might be able to smile and see me like that, but that Karl died on April 13th. He's never coming back. I don't remember this man," he added. "You are talking to the physical me, but my soul was killed a long time ago."
The cities' heartbreaking comments came the same day the NBA postponed a season opener between the Houston Rockets and the Oklahoma City Thunder for violating the COVID-19 protocol.
