Kayleigh McEnany Grilled on Trump’s ‘Kung Flu’ Rally Slur
Three months ago, at the very beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, CBS news reporter Weijia Jiang announced that a White House official had described COVID-19 as "kung flu". "I wonder what they call it behind my back," she tweeted at the time.
After President Donald Trump himself used this overtly racist term during his campaign speech in Tulsa over the weekend, Jiang asked the White House press secretary, Kayleigh McEnany, about it on Monday.
When Jiang found Trump calling himself "the least racist in the world," he asked, "Why does he use racist phrases like kung flu?"

"The president doesn't," McEnany lied. "The president points out that the virus originated in China." While the spokesman continued to defend Trump's words, Jiang pushed back and expressed concern across Asia as Americans feared that these words would further spark racist attacks on them.
"To be clear, are you saying that the White House doesn't think it's racist?" Jiang asked.
"To be clear, I think the media is trying to play games with the terminology of this virus if the focus is on the fact that China is letting it out of its country," McEnany said.
Later in the meeting, PBS NewsHour's Yamiche Alcindor raised the fact that White House consultant Kellyanne Conway described the term “kung flu” as “extremely offensive” in March. "Does the President agree with Kellyanne Conway or is he saying that the term is not" highly offensive "and wrong?"
When McEnany replied that "the President does not believe it is offensive to determine that this virus is from China," Alcindor urged her to actually answer the Conway and Kung Flu question. Instead, McEnany quickly turned to a softball question about John Bolton from her invited guest, OAN reporter Chanel Rion.
