Ken, the Famously Adorable Roast Sweet Potato Stand Cashier in Hokkaido, Passes Away
Ken, the Shiba Inu who toured the sweet potato shop in Sapporo, Hokkaido, died at the age of 6.
Heartbreaking news: Ken passed away around 12:50 p.m. on June 6, according to his owner's Instagram post, Mothership reported. The owner said Ken had returned to his "favorite (sweet potato) shop" and thanked everyone who supported the Shiba Inu.
Ken's owner said the pooch was feeling a little sick in a May 31 post. The update also states that Ken will do his "best" while receiving medical treatment.
However, Ken returned home with an "oxygen house" on June 5 and was in poor shape.
Further details: Ken started working for Inu no Yakiimoyasan when he was 2 years old, it says on their website.
Its owner said he never intended to open a sweet potato stand, but the decision was made one day while roasting sweet potatoes outdoors and the smell caught the attention of his neighbors.
He initially opened the store for free but decided to go into business when demand started to surge.
The owner opened the self-service booth where customers paid for what they wanted and took their purchases while Ken looked after them.
Since 2019, the owner has donated portions of the proceeds to animal welfare organizations and raised over 80,000 yen ($ 730), Mainichi said when it reported in February 2020.
