Kevin Bacon on why new haunted house film 'You Should Have Left' could qualify as 'quarantine horror'

Kevin Bacon has made horror before - a lot of horror - starting with one of the earliest films on his résumé, the pioneering slasher film from 1980, Friday the 13th. In the years since he was in other scary parties like Flatliners (1990) Tremors (1990), Stir of Echoes (1999) and Hollow Man (2000).
But Bacon's recent foray into horror feels particularly current. In You Should Have Left, he plays a rich banker who flees from Los Angeles with his younger wife (Amanda Seyfried) and daughter (Avery Tiiu Essex) to vacation in an elegant and lavish rental home in the Welsh countryside. Only the house is badly haunted, and part of its supernatural trap is that its already socially distant residents find it very, very difficult to leave the house.
At a time when many Americans are still connected to their home country due to the corona virus, a new subgenre seems to have arisen: quarantine horror.
"I hope that the quarantine will not take so long that there will be a whole subgenre, but you never know," Bacon told Yahoo Entertainment recently in a video chat interview about the film (see above).
You should have gone
Theo Conroy (Bacon) is a successful middle-aged man, whose marriage to his much younger actress Susanna (Seyfried) is torn apart at the seams, frayed by her secrecy, jealousy and the shadow of his past. To fix their relationship, Theo and Susanna book a vacation for themselves and their six-year-old daughter Ella (Avery Essex) in a stunning, secluded modern home in the Welsh countryside. What at first glance seems like a perfect retreat is distorted into a perfect nightmare
At least the film produced by Jason Blum gives those of us who are still in quarantine something new to consume. You Should Have Left follows the Troll World Tour and The King of Staten Island as another main release from Universal Pictures to forego future theatrical releases and premieres directly on digital platforms while most of the country is stuck at home.
"We imagined the film as something that works well with video-on-demand," says Bacon. "And it just seemed sensible to delete it now."
You Should Have Left marks a reunion between Bacon and the writer and director David Koepp, who previously worked together on the critically acclaimed ghost story Stir of Echoes from 1999.
"I tried to get him to work with me on someone else," says the actor. "We remained friends, which doesn't happen too often. I just kept insulting him and wearing him out after 20 years.
“I loved working with him on Stir of Echoes, a film that I thought was a fantastic film. And finally I could see the wheels turning in his head and in a fairly short succession he wrote a draft and then a script [based on the book by the same name by Daniel Kehlmann] and we took it to Blumhouse and [then] we were in Wales. "
You Should Have Left is now streamed on all major digital platforms.
