Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard Share the One Change That Made a “Huge Impact” On Their Family Life

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard shared how they bond as a family two weeks after Shepard reported his opioid relapse.
At the Advertising Week 2020 marketing summit, the couple announced they were using daily gratitude practices with their children, 5-year-old Delta and 7-year-old Lincoln.
"Dax has suggested a few times, 'Let's just name three things we're grateful for,'" Bell said on Thursday, October 8th. "I'm shocked at how much our girls got involved with it."
She continued, "We are in bed sometimes at night. They will say," Does anyone want to talk about what they are grateful for? "And immediately [my] mother's heart goes crazy and I say," Sure, if you do that "and try to be cool."
Shepard said the 12-step program launched by the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous to help overcome addiction encourages expressing what you are grateful for.
"We tried to put it off until the morning as recommended by the 12-step program," said the parenting alum. "As soon as you start the day there are the three blessings, there are many different traditions that include a morning gratitude list."

The 45-year-old father added, "It has made a huge impact on me and it seems to work for the kids too."
Their ritual is also based on a Friday tradition at the girls' school, which Bell described as "her rose, her bud and her thorn".

"You can talk about your rose, your favorite thing of the week or your day. [And] your thorn, which as a child might be something you didn't like, but as you grow it should be something you could have improved upon "said the co-founder of the baby brand Hello Bello.
Shepard stepped in: "Right now it's just a general complaint. Occasionally there is an aspect of self-improvement."
The final aspect of the exercise is the bud or flower to look forward to. "And they really got into it. We used to do it at dinner and now we do it in bed," said Bell, 40.
The family shared their gratitude rituals after Shepard announced that he had relapsed from around 2012. He stated that he had been sober for eight years but then had a motorcycle accident and his father began receiving cancer treatment. Shepard started taking Vicodin to relieve his pain while his father was taking Percocet.
"The number one thing we had in common was that we were both king addicts and never used anything together," Shepard said on the September 25 episode of his Armchair Expert podcast. "And we sat there stoned and looked at the lake. And at that moment I felt delighted and was just happy."
Since then, if he were injured, he would get into the same "cycle". About six months ago, he was injured again and began to "become more and more shady". In the past eight weeks, its usage had increased and "I am now only using the 30 mil Oxys that I bought."

He admitted his addiction to having Monica Padman as a co-host, got help, and made it all clear. "It's the only experience I can remember that this was just grace, the definition of grace," Shepard said. "And it was very emotional. It was a really, really surreal kind of experience."
On September 28th, Shepard thanked his fans for their messages of support. "I want to thank everyone who was so incredibly nice to us," he said. "I'm really, really grateful and there are so many beautiful, nice people."
