Kwon Alexander diagnosed with season-ending injury
The New Orleans Saints' fears were confirmed after Friday's win against the Minnesota Vikings. The initial assumption of an Achilles injury for linebacker Kwon Alexander was confirmed by further reviews. ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported on the update on Alexander's condition, which was confirmed by the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
It is a great loss to the defense of the saints. Alexander had been a transformative addition to the unit, adding the much-needed experience and athleticism alongside all-pro linebacker Demario Davis. Without him, the Saints have to start again with Davis, the fourth year professional Alex Anzalone. Anzalone has shown lightning bolts before, but his mistakes this season led the team to act for Alexander in the first place.
Alexander appeared in seven games for the Saints following their mid-season trade with the San Francisco 49ers, a total of 27 tackles (17 solo), 4 pass separations, one forced fumble and a few fumble recoveries. He's exactly the kind of game presence the team wanted to trade in for Zack Baun in this year's draft, but the rookie didn't get on the field much outside of specialty teams.
Additionally, NewOrleans.Football's Nick Underhill reports that Alexander's contract includes a $ 2 million Injury Guarantee that will be triggered on April 1, 2021 if Alexander stays in the squad. The recovery time for an Achilles surgery can be up to six months. So it is likely that he is still there. Regardless, the Saints would likely be working on his contract anyway (it will count towards $ 13.4 million towards the salary cap for the next season).
