Lakers Pay Tribute to Kobe Bryant on Championship Rings With Special Black Mamba Symbol
The Los Angeles Lakers continue to recognize Kobe Bryant's role in inspiring the team's special season by incorporating his memory into the design of their championship rings.
The Lakers played their first game of the 2020-2021 NBA season on Tuesday, December 22nd. Prior to the tip, members were given their rings to show they had won the title in October. LeBron James and Anthony Davis are currently the most famous athletes in the roster.
Jeweler Jason Arasoben told ESPN that his design for the hardware pays tribute to the icon of the late Lakers by including a black mamba snake that surrounds the unique number for each player. Before he retired from the sport in April 2016, Kobe often called himself the nickname "Black Mamba".
In addition, the rings feature a removable top that shows tiny versions of all the jerseys that the team has pulled back. At the bottom of this ad are jerseys numbered "8" and "24", which represent the two numbers that the five-time NBA champion, who died in a helicopter crash with his 13-year-old daughter in January, claimed Laker wore. "We created a detachable top that exposes the rafters in the Staples Center with [jerseys] of all retired Laker sizes, with an emphasis on Kobe's # 8 and # 24 jersey. It's on a snakeskin background," Jason told ESPN.
