“Land Yachts – Cruising the Interstate Highways”
"Land Yachts, Cruising the Interstate Highways," the Audrain Automobile Museum's newest exhibit, opening Saturday, June 4, invites automotive enthusiasts to travel back in time to when land yachts ruled the highways and backroads. Running from June 4th to September 4th, the show will feature cars as big and responsible as the motor yachts that grace Newport's historic harbor during the summer season.
The museum's intimate gallery showcases 14 of the finest and best-known examples of "land yachts" built between 1948 and 1970.
No "land yacht" exhibition would be complete without a 1948 Hudson Commodore Eight. The Commodore was the largest and most luxurious model produced by Hudson at the time. Although the production period from January 1942 to August 1945 was interrupted due to the war, an all new aerodynamic design was introduced for 1948, representing one of the first restyled post-war automobiles when the hunger for new cars was hotter than ever. This example has clocked up just 27,000 miles since 1948 and has won first place at every car show it has attended.
The epitome of 1950s style and status was never more evident than in the 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz, the sleekest Caddy money could buy. While most Cadillacs in the 1950s touted the best craftsmanship in a General Motors vehicle and appealed to more conservative, affluent buyers, the stylish flagship Eldorado 2-door convertible was renamed Biarritz, named after the elegant seaside town on the coast of France . Its hardtop counterpart became Eldorado Seville. The Biarritz was a huge hit with the rich and famous, who wanted to see and be seen in this sleek car.
In the 1960s, "Land Yachts" heralded the era of muscle cars. The 1955 Chrysler 300 Hardtop was considered by many to be the first true muscle car with its famous 331 cu.in. Hemi V-8. The "Forward Look" of designer Virgil Exner and chief engineer Bob Rogers had its breakthrough in 1957, when the Chrysler eggcrate grille and four-headlamp body lines led back to huge fins and taillights with cathedral windows. The 1961 Chrysler 300G was the last iconic "Big Fin" car in the Chrysler "Letter Car" series, inspired by the 1955 Ghia Gilda concept car. A costly $5800 limited production, the front end was heavily modified to accommodate four angled headlights framing an eggcrate grille with body lines leading back to giant fins and cathedral-windowed taillights. Sales increased to 1,280 300G hardtops and 337 convertibles produced in 1961.
The 1970 Plymouth Superbird 2-door was both a big car and one of the most powerful ever put on the road. The Plymouth Road Runner Superbird, along with its sister car, the Dodge Charger Daytona, showcased the design that changed NASCAR forever. With its extended nose and massive rear wing, the 1970 car was much faster and more capable than any of its competitors and was the first NASCAR to surpass the 200 mile mark. The Road Runner Superbird lives on today as perhaps the most iconic muscle car of all time and the car that changed NASCAR forever. While it was dominant on the track, it carried a friendly personality off the track. The Road Runner cartoon has been placed in multiple places on the car, adding a friendly charm to the car. The car also includes a horn similar to the cartoon's "meep meep" sound. The overall design was considered extreme by many enthusiasts and was clearly designed to compete on the NASCAR circuit.
