David and Underwood met at Sacha Baron Cohen's birthday party in 2017, which David revealed in a profile for The New York Times in April. Underwood worked as a producer on Cohen's Showtime satire series Who Is America? And is friends with Cohen's wife, Isla Fisher, who guest starred on the final season of Curb Your Enthusiasm.
"We sat next to each other, I think with that in mind," he told the Times about the repair. "Much to her surprise, I left before dessert. I was doing so well, jokingly, I didn't want to risk staying too long and making a good impression."
According to a January GQ profile, Underwood moved home to David's Pacific Palisades in 2019 and brought back a cat named Elwood. The couple also adopted an Australian Shepherd puppy, whom they named Bernie after Bernie Sanders, a distant cousin of David.

David has been hiding at home with Underwood and Cazzie since the COVID-19 pandemic hit the US in March.
"There is not a moment on the day when there is no friction between at least two of us," he told the Times des Quarantine Trio. "Then, when that is resolved, two others are on each other's necks and it's always about dishes. 'You didn't do the dishes!' Or, "You didn't help with the dishes!" I think that's being shouted all over the world now. "
"Another problem is that one of us starts a show and doesn't wait for the other. Big problem!" he added. "At least you have to ask. Ashley doesn't ask. She starts and then it's impossible to catch up. And I'll catch her. I'll go into the room and she'll turn off the TV right away."
