While Lil Nas X's "Montero (Call Me By Your Name)" is # 1 on the global Spotify charts, the artist and some of his fans claim that the title is disappearing in certain countries and from various streaming services.
It all started on Tuesday when a fan tweeted that the track, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 last week, was allegedly not working on their Spotify account, to which Lil Nas X replied that "it works on all streaming services". Then he added, "Since the call on your name has stopped working on many streaming services, I'll be uploading the sound to pornhub at 3pm."
Complex was able to play the song on Spotify at 3:00 p.m. ET with no such problems, but several cross-platform fans still say they have problems with the track. One shared a screenshot of her apparently unsuccessful attempt to play the song on Apple Music and wrote that she wanted to "laugh at you guys because you can't hear BUT I can't anymore." Nas even encourages fans to record the title on-screen to save on their phone galleries in case it is permanently removed.
Columbia Records sent a tweet thanking fans for reporting the issue. "It's out of our control, unfortunately, but we're doing everything we can to keep the song updated via streaming services." We will keep you updated as soon as we hear more. Thank you for your understanding."
On the other hand, Billboard posted a response stating that "it can be confirmed that the song will not be removed".
In further tweeted comments, Nas wrote, “Not even a joke. Every stream calls me by your name today because it may not be available tomorrow and there is really nothing I can do about it. thanks for all the support tho! ”
It's hard to tell if Nas is playing the ultimate prank right now, but the musician insists he means business.
All of this, of course, comes after "Montero (Call Me By Your Name)" topped the Hot 100 last week and Silk Sonic's "Leave the Door Open" took the throne this week. The song's newest competition will be Polo G's "RAPSTAR" aiming for a # 1 debut.
