Lin Qi, chairman and CEO of Chinese entertainment company Yoozoo Group and producer of the upcoming Netflix series The Three-Body Problem, has died after allegedly being poisoned on December 16. He was 39 years old.
The Yoozoo Group confirmed that Lin died on Christmas Day after being hospitalized about a week earlier. Shanghai police are currently investigating his death and have arrested a suspect surnamed Xu, whom Chinese media identified as Lin's colleague in Yoozoo, Xu Yao. Local reports also claim that an argument among Yoozoo executives took place before Lin's death.
Lin founded Yoozoo in 2009 and helped steer the successful transition from producing online games to mobile games. In a statement on Friday, the company said, "The Board of Directors pays the chairman its utmost respect for his contributions to the company," adding that executives and employees "felt deeply saddened and expressed their condolences to the family. ”
Lin co-co-produced with Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss on Netflix's upcoming adaptation of The Three-Body Problem. The series is based on a trilogy of science fiction novels (to which Yoozoo holds the rights) by the Chinese author Liu Cixin, which shows mankind's first contact with an alien civilization.
The series controversy arose earlier this year due to re-surfaced comments from Liu apparently defending the Chinese government's mass imprisonment and persecution of Uighur Muslims. In September, five US senators sent a letter to Netflix criticizing the streamer for its association with the author.
"Mr. Liu is a Chinese citizen living in China - he is the author of the books, not the creator of this Netflix series," Netflix wrote in a response. "We disagree with his comments that have nothing to do with his book or this Netflix show."
