London drivers feel the pinch as gas stations run dry
The thirst for fuel lingers in London for the second day in a row.
Empty pumps at gas stations mean a weekend of lost business for taxi driver David Turner.
“I have about two to three hours, about 20 miles. So I don't know what to do. I either have to go home or park and drive home. Leave it until Monday or get out early Sunday and take the chance to get (fuel) early. "
A shortage of truck drivers in the UK has created problems with the delivery of fuel from refineries to gas stations.
As petrol is rationed, ministers have warned motorists to stop panic buying.
It did not work.
"The radio, the television, the media. It seems there is no shortage, but really none. But people are worried, 'Oh. I have to get diesel, I have to get gas."
Brexit and the global health crisis suspended driver training and testing for about a year.
Downing Street now plans to issue 5,000 temporary visas to foreign truck drivers, but retailers think these plans are insufficient.
The transportation industry says the UK needs 100,000 more drivers to meet demand.
According to the British Retail Consortium, the supermarkets alone will need at least 15,000 truck drivers before Christmas to be fully utilized.
In a statement, Prime Minister Boris Johnson's office said it was considering "temporary measures to avoid immediate problems" but declined to provide further details.
The fuel problem arises because the UK, the world's fifth largest economy, is also grappling with rising natural gas prices in Europe, leading to soaring energy prices and possible food shortages.
