Although celebrities spent part of the year at home on assignments, there was no shortage of drama in the entertainment world in 2020. Check out some of the biggest scandals that hit Hollywood this year in no particular order.
Harvey Weinstein sentenced to 23 years in prison
More than 100 women made allegations of sexual harassment, misconduct and / or assault by the Oscar winner. In February, a jury found Weinstein guilty of rape and criminal sexual assault against two women in separate incidents. He was behind bars for between five and 29 years. The verdict and 23-year prison sentence were a monumental moment for the #MeToo movement as Weinstein, once considered the most powerful man in Hollywood, is now a convicted rapist.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle step down from their royal duties
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex sent shock waves across Britain with their decision to break free from the royal family. The couple moved to California with their 1-year-old son Archie, initially moving to Los Angeles before eventually settling in Montecito. Despite being across the pond, Prince Harry's relationship - and rumor - with Prince William continues to make headlines.
Lori Loughlin reports to prison over college admissions scandal
In a surprising turn of events, Loughlin and Mossimo Giannulli pleaded guilty to their role in the nationwide bribery program. The couple paid $ 500,000 to illegally enroll their two daughters at the University of Southern California. The Full House star was sentenced to two months in prison while her fashion designer husband agreed to serve five months behind bars. One of the couple's daughters, Olivia Jade, broke her silence over the scandal in December. "I know they are good people and I know that I'm not going to judge them for a mistake they made. Although it's a big deal, they'll pay the price," the influencer said on Red Table Talk "Regardless of what people say, I've seen them every day and how they received all of this, and I know they have problems."
Ups and downs of the Tiger King
When the colorful characters on Netflix's record breaking Tiger King like Joe Exotic, Carole Baskin, and Jeff Lowe stepped into the spotlight when the documentaries debuted in March, they never left. Baskin continued to fight unofficial allegations that she had something to do with the disappearance of her ex-husband Don Lewis in 1997. She also danced the samba on Dancing With the Stars, but a commercial from Lewis' family seeking information about his disappearance stole the show. Meanwhile, actor Jeff Lowe, who had taken over the Exotic Zoo since the document, closed the facility after the U.S. Department of Agriculture suspended his exhibitor license. The move followed a public report detailing the poor living conditions of the animals, and control was given to Baskin. Bhagavan "Doc" Antle has been formally charged with animal cruelty and human trafficking. Exotic's husband, Dillon Passage, was arrested in Texas in November for a DUI while Exotic himself was fighting for a pardon for outgoing President Trump. Despite the off-camera drama, Tiger King inspired some of this year's most popular Halloween costumes.
"Tiger King" star Carole Baskin eliminated in "Dancing With the Stars"
"Tiger King" star Carole Baskin performed her last "cat" dance on "Dancing With the Stars" on Monday night. It was Disney Night on the show and Baskin decided to dance to "The Lion King" hit "Circle of Life". Baskin and her partner Pasha Kovalev wore heavy makeup and lion costumes and watched the role, but unfortunately they did not dance it. The performance fell flat and the judges tried hard to say positive things. "I am stunned," said Judge Bruno Tonioli. “I've never seen a samba like this before. I don't know where to start “Then he compared her ability to move with that of the Brooklyn Bridge. Her final combined score of 12 from the judges was the lowest of the season, and she was ultimately eliminated.
Vanderpump Rules eliminates the original stars Stassi Schroeder, Jax Taylor and Kristen Doute
In June it was announced that Schroeder and Doute were fired following a racist incident involving former co-star Faith Stowers. Both women finally apologized. Months later, the hammer fell on Taylor, as he and his wife Brittany Cartwright will not be returning to season 9 either. Newbies Max Boyens and Brett Caprioni, who joined the Bravo Show last year, were also dropped because of old insensitive tweets.
Johnny Depp loses libel trial after courtroom showdown with Amber Heard

A judge ruled that it was "essentially true". Depp has molested Heard more than 10 times during their relationship. The Pirates of the Caribbean sued The Sun tabloid over a 2018 article calling him a "bully", which resulted in an explosive three-week trial. Heard was the main defense witness when she testified about a series of alleged attacks, all denied by Depp. The actors have publicly accused themselves of physical and emotional abuse for years, but that was the first legal decision on the matter - and the ramifications for Depp were quick. He continues to maintain his innocence and tries to appeal the judgment.
Ron Jeremy charged with sexual assault
The former adult movie star faces more than 250 years in prison for multiple sex crimes if convicted as a defendant. Jeremy faces 11 cases of rape, eight cases of sexual battery by restraint, six cases of violent oral copulation, five cases of violent penetration by a foreign object, and each a number of sodomy, assault with intent to commit rape, penetration by one Object to an unconscious or sleeping victim and lewd behavior with a 15 year old girl towards strangers. Jeremy, who has been jailed since his arrest in June for being unable to bail him for $ 6.6 million, pleaded guilty.
Ellen DeGeneres Show investigated for toxic information in the workplace
The "Be Kind" presenter saw her seemingly friendly talk show blown up on charges of intimidation, sexual misconduct and racial insensitivity. She had no impact during the internal investigation, but three producers were fired and she took responsibility for saying, "My name is on the show." The talk show returned with some changes in season 18 and it addressed the scandal, but the show was suspended in December after DeGeneres signed COVID-19.
Jada Pinkett Smith admits an "entanglement" with August Alsina

Thanks to an open-ended episode of Red Table Talk in which Jada confirmed having a romantic relationship with the singer while he was separated from Will Smith, “entanglement” was one of Google's most searched definitions for 2020. (Jada was the third highest wanted actor.) "I was in a lot of pain and was very broken," said Jada, while an emotional will sat at the red table. The couple, married since 1997, swore their relationship is now stronger than ever.
Keith Raniere, the leader of the NXIVM sex cult, is given a life sentence
Raniere was convicted of several federal crimes in 2019, including sex trafficking, extortion, and sexual content with children. In October, a judge sentenced the NXIVM founder to 120 years in prison, a great relief for dozens of victims of the women's branding cult. Prosecutors argued that Raniere had a secret sisterhood with NXIVM, a group billed as a self-help organization in which women acted as his “slaves”. The case attracted worldwide attention and was the subject of HBO documentaries The Vow.

Rapper "Savage" was shot in her foot and left a house party in the Hollywood Hills that needed surgery. Megan, mocked after the trauma, eventually confirmed reports that Lanez, a Toronto rapper, was the attacker. The two were said to be romantically involved. The LA District Attorney's Office accused Lanez of counting one attack each with a semi-automatic firearm - personal use of a firearm - and carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle. He was ordered to stay at least 100 meters from Megan. He denied their claims.
Jerry Harris arrested for child sexual exploitation
Harris, the breakout star of Netflix's documentaries Cheer, was arrested in September on federal child pornography charges. The 21-year-old has been accused of tricking an underage boy into producing sexually explicit videos and photos of himself. At that point, Harris' agent denied the claims. He is now facing additional charges of alleged inappropriate behavior towards minors.
J.K. Rowling faces arguments over comments on the trans community

Fans of the Harry Potter books - and many stars from the movie franchise they spawned, including Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson - have distanced themselves from Rowling over controversial remarks she has made about the trans community. In June, the once-beloved author's tweets about biological sex sparked allegations of transphobia. Rowling then doubled down on an essay expressing her concern "about the new transgender activism" and posted new tweets criticizing hormone therapy. The inclusion of a serial killer dressed in women's clothes in her latest Robert Galbraith thriller Troubled Blood has also sparked criticism and called for a boycott. Rowling has remained committed to her faith, however. In August, she returned an award from the Robert F. Kennedy human rights organization after Kerry Kennedy denounced her "deeply disturbing transphobic tweets and statements". Rowling said, "No award or honor, no matter my admiration for the person it's named after, means so much to me that I would lose the right to obey the dictates of my own conscience."
Danny Masterson charged with sexual assault
The That '70s Show star was accused in June of raping three women in various incidents between 2001 and 2003. Masterson has denied all allegations and the actor's attorney called it "a politically motivated case".
Kim Kardashian's "soundless" quarantine birthday party
The Keeping Up With The Kardashians turned 40 during the pandemic and just couldn't let it go by without flying 25 members of their "inner circle" to a private island (based on COVID testing) to throw a big old bash . She was beaten after sharing photos of the lavish experience and calling herself "humiliated and blessed" while many Americans battled over basics like rent or groceries and the pandemic death toll skyrocketed. In the meantime, her husband Kanye West barely made the trip and showed up for the past two days after her actual birthday, but sent his unusual (some say "scary") and expensive hologram gift with her.

Britney Spears' Struggle for Conservation
The #FreeBritney movement exploded when the star officially moved to boot her father, Jamie Spears, as her conservator, a role he has had since her breakdown in 2008. However, he keeps the job along with new co-curator Bessemer Trust when it comes to running Britney's business (she has a separate nursing manager who oversees her health), despite the star's attorney telling the judge she's "scared" of it her father and refuses to go back to work until he is removed. Jamie, who says he took care of her floundering business, recently admitted he hasn't spoken to Britney since August but vows to continue to "unconditionally protect, protect and ... love her ". The drama has shared the Spears family, and their fans have scoured their social media for signs of coercion.
Britney Spears' father speaks in the fight for the conservatory: "I love Britney unconditionally."
Jamie Spears breaks his silence over the ongoing conservatory drama with daughter Britney Spears that sparked the #FreeBritney movement. In an interview with CNN, Jamie revealed how broken up their relationship is, claiming he hasn't spoken to the singer since August.
