Major storm slams California, triggering landslides
Search and rescue teams are on high alert after a severe storm in California triggered devastating landslides that struck a neighborhood south of San Francisco.
In Monterey County, two dozen buildings were damaged and residents were suddenly caught in a mudslide. At least two people were hospitalized and dozens of animals were rescued.
Approximately 17 million people are on flash flood watch after California was hit by high winds, pouring rain, and thick snow. Nationwide, almost 300,000 people are still without electricity.

Parts of the Sierra Nevada could see up to 10 feet of snow. Thousands of people have been evacuated in the mountains of Santa Cruz because of the danger of mudslides.
"I've been here for 15 years and this is the worst that has ever happened," said Maureen Huber, a resident of Bonny Doon.
Rescue teams removed some of the mud, but the fire chief said about 70% of people in the danger zone refuse to evacuate.
An atmospheric river drives the bad weather. It's a concentrated band of moisture that can move water vapor faster than the Mississippi.
Southern California is now preparing for stormy conditions. A heavily trafficked section of Interstate 5 was closed and traffic was diverted due to dangerous road conditions. Eleven people were rescued after being stranded on a remote icy road for 10 hours.
