Man arrested in Miami mass shooting that left 3 dead and 20 injured
Police have arrested three people and injured 20 others in connection with a mass shooting outside a banquet hall in Miami earlier this year.
Davonte Barnes, 22, of Miami Gardens, was charged with three first degree murder and 20 attempted murder late Thursday, according to the Miami-Dade County Jail records. He is currently being held without a bond.
Barnes, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday, is the first suspect arrested in connection with the May 30 shootings.
That morning, three people got out of an SUV and began "shooting at random" prior to a "scheduled event" held at El Mula Banquet Hall on 186th Street in the Hialeah neighborhood west of Miami Gardens, Miami Police Department -Called Dade.
Safety videos released by the authorities showed the trio apparently carrying guns, getting out of a white SUV and walking out of the picture. The people run back to the vehicle shortly afterwards before they drive off.
The three victims killed were identified by authorities and family members as Shaniqua Peterson, 32; Desmond Owens, 26; and Clayton Dillard III, 26.
For clues leading to the arrest of the shooters, the authorities offered a reward of US $ 30,000 and an additional US $ 100,000 for their convictions. The $ 100,000 was donated by businessman and television personality Marcus Lemonis, who has a reality show on CNBC.
In June, inspectors declared the banquet hall unsafe after finding evidence of electrical work carried out without proper permits and violations of the facility's certificate of use as a banquet hall.
The shooting was one of several incidents during a fatal Memorial Day weekend in South Florida.
Miami-Dade County's Mayoress Daniella Levine Cava launched "new efforts to strengthen enforcement and protection" after the wave of gun violence.
Some of these efforts have included the use of joint police and law enforcement units "to expand the surveillance and enforcement of potential illegal activities in commercial locations that encourage an environment of lawlessness and violence".
