Man Charged With Terrorism After Fatal Running Over of Muslim Family in Canada
A young man accused of willfully running over a Pakistani Muslim family in London, Ontario on June 6, is charged with terrorism this week.
The Indictment: The incident that killed four adults and injured one child led to multiple charges against suspect Nathaniel Veltman, who was arrested shortly after he fled.
Police said they found evidence that the attack was planned, deliberate and "hateful". They believe Veltman targeted the family "because they were Muslim".
The 20-year-old was initially charged with first degree murder and attempted murder. On Monday, prosecutors added two terrorism charges, CBC News reported.
The maximum sentence for murder with a terrorist background is life imprisonment with no option to apply for a 25-year probationary period. This is the maximum sentence for first degree murder, according to CTV News.
The bigger picture: politicians and community members have called for action to end Islamophobia in response to the deadly attack.
In an open letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) called for a National Action Summit on Islamophobia "to show a way for Canada to end violence against Muslims." The letter was signed by over 100 faith and civil rights groups.
The opposition New Democratic Party (NDP) then put a unanimous vote in parliament for approval, calling on the government to convene the summit before the end of July. Chairman Jagmeet Singh said the motion had been accepted.
A public memorial service was held for the victims on Saturday. A GoFundMe page set up for the surviving family member - a 9-year-old child - has raised $ 930,000 as of this writing.
Veltman will return to court on June 21st.
