Marjorie Taylor Greene Laughs When Asked If She's Responsible For Protecting People
MP Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) Worried critics on Tuesday when she burst out laughing over a reporter's question about coronavirus deaths and their role in voter safety.
Greene held a press conference after being banned from Twitter for 12 hours for spreading COVID-19 misinformation. In tweets on Sunday and Monday, she falsely claimed that COVID-19 is not dangerous for people unless they are obese or over 65 and said vaccines shouldn't be required.
Many people under the age of 65 have become seriously ill or have died from the disease. Currently, 99% of COVID-19 deaths are unvaccinated.
"Do you feel responsible for the safety of the people of Georgia?" Asked a reporter during the press conference. “There are children, skinny people, who have died from the coronavirus. Do you feel responsible? "
"Tia, you are beating me up," she said. “You know what, I think the people's responsibility is theirs. To read the information - and it is everywhere. You can practically not walk past a street corner and see nothing about COVID-19. I believe in the individual responsibility of humans to read, to find out and to make their own decisions. "
The reporter, who later identified herself online as Tia Mitchell, Washington correspondent for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, asked lawmakers if she believed in science.
"I believe in God. And of course there is science," replied Greene. "I don't worship science and I don't think science rules everything. I believe God rules everything."
Mitchell said she asked the question after listening to Greene who downplayed the effects of COVID-19 on young people and those who are not obese.
Greene has persistently spread dangerous and proven false theories about vaccines and COVID-19, even as the Delta variant is increasing across the country, causing a new surge in cases.
The MP has been widely criticized on the Internet for laughing inappropriately when asked about the life and safety of her constituents.
“Dead Americans? Smiles with laughter. The face of the Republican Party, ”tweeted political commentator Brian Tyler Cohen.
Healthcare attorney Peter Morley said Greene was a "shame!"
"Representative. Greene laughs at: "thin people" are dying of # COVID19 followed by "you're wrecking me," he tweeted. “MILLIONS have died from this pandemic worldwide. Nobody laughs. "
Greene did not immediately respond to HuffPost's request for comment.
