Before we got the good news that Matt James was the new bachelor and the first black leading actor in show history, we knew who he was: he is Tyler Cameron's BFF bachelorette alum and he should be in Clare Crawley's bachelorette later this year Start the season. Not only that, Crawley and James may have had some early beef indirectly before the show - although this is not confirmed, there are some tweets and posts that seem to link the two to a disagreement over social media activity. (Will it make bachelor networking events uncomfortable, do you think?) Here's what we know about it so far, and we'll keep the post updated if anything changes.
Crawley tweeted displeasure about ... someone on cameo.
It all started when Crawley, who spoke on social media about what she needed and wanted in her season, tweeted about someone. For context, Cameo is a video messaging platform where celebrities can send messages to fans.
Clare Crawley

If you're doing interviews and creating cameo accounts before you're even in my season ... you're in for the wrong reasons ... #dontwasteyourtime

The fans quickly pointed out that James was on cameo - but that his job was to raise money for those affected by the coronavirus pandemic. James has done a lot of community service, especially through his community organization ABC Food Tours.
Then Crawley and James made clarifications.
In his Instagram stories (now expired), James said in a message: "Well, for those of you who may have missed the news earlier this week, myself and Alex Bachman ... have all of our Robin Hood Foundation cameo earnings promised to fight this fight, "says E! News. "We have just found creative ways to raise money for these children who are the future, and I hope you can help." He didn't seem to be referring to anything (or anyone), but the timing seemed more than a coincidence.
In response to a fan response suggesting that her tweet against James was unfair, Crawley made it clear that her comment was actually about several people:

You shouldn't have assumed baby, it was about MULTIPLE men and a general thought that I had when we were here in a real crisis where someone's (everyone's) time + sincerity is so important.

And then Chris Harrison weighed in and told Entertainment Tonight:
"First of all, everyone relaxes about the whole charity thing. Clare is not against charity, she is not against Matt doing charity. It is fantastic and Matt, good for you that you did something positive during this quarantine. But with these words she's not specific when she talks about Matt she just says that she lives under certain guidelines and rules because she is the Bachelorette. She's kind of in our family and she respects that. These people don't live under these guidelines, because they're not really part of our cause yet, and so they live their lives and use it when they're chosen to be on the Bachelorette as a little jump point ... so I think it's just like that "Look, I wish everyone would respect the rules. We all play by the same rules. So when you come in there is a feeling of innocence and naivety and we can actually get through it. "She's not mad at Matt, and it's all good. And she's not mad at someone who does things for charity not angry with Clare. "
What is also interesting? Crawley has not yet commented on James' choice as The Bachelor - even though she is on the west coast and / or is just about to find the right words. TBD.
