Criminal Minds will air its official revival this fall, but it looks like original actor Matthew Gray Gubler has other plans.
On September 21st, it was announced on Instagram that Criminal Minds: Evolution will be coming to Paramount+ on November 24th. While fans will be thrilled to see the BAU back at their old desks (like Joe Mantegna, A.J. Cook, and Aisha Tyler, to name a few) alongside new faces, many may be missing a certain boy genius. ICYMI: In July it was announced that Matthew would not be known as Dr. Spencer Reid will return to the procedural drama.
Amid the latest news on the reboot's release date, Criminal Minds fans couldn't help but wonder what the actor has been up to since the first version of Criminal Minds ended in 2020. As it turns out, there's some glimpse into his current life thanks to a video he recently shared on Instagram. In the video clip released September 20, Matthew excitedly slides down a ramp on a snow tube. It was his way of welcoming the fall season.
When fans saw Matthew reappear on social media concurrently with the latest Criminal Minds news, they immediately flooded his comments section with their thoughts.
"I love how [you] wake up in the fall and then disappear for the next year until it's all about Halloween," one person wrote. "I'm coming home from work to a timeline of you screaming and I couldn't be happier. Happy Gublerween Matthew," commented another follower. "Your fan family missed you! Can't wait to see more spooky posts! We love you! ❤️❤️,” added another fan.
Despite the thrill of seeing our favorite Criminal Minds star in action again, how does Reid tie into the new reboot? According to showrunner Erica Messer, we'll definitely see remains of the character, along with hopes of seeing him and fellow actor Daniel Henney, who left the show after making his season 13 debut as Special Agent Matt Simmons.

"It's a bit of a mystery as to what Reid and Simmons are up to, but they're certainly not forgotten," she told TVLine in September. "DR. Reids and I think Matt Simmons' desks are still there, still have stuff on them... If any of you have returned [to the office after the pandemic], you still have stuff on your desk that was there for two years. So we're definitely going to play that. But [Spencer and Matt] aren't gone."
She continued, "Our hope is that the team members that we finished the series with on CBS can eventually come back and play, but everyone has different projects. We started filming in August and we'll be done in December... so there was a short window of opportunity to try to get all of our friends to play.
Until that day possibly comes, we're just glad to see that Matthew is doing well and embracing his annual tradition of welcoming the fall season.
