Milad Rouf was sentenced to 15 years in prison on October 7 for attacking his ex-girlfriend with sulfuric acid.
The former English medical student dressed up in a thick suit and makeup to appear as a black woman during the harrowing attack, The Atlanta Star reported. Rouf paired the costume with a hat and sunglasses to further hide his identity.
During the incident, which occurred in May 2021, Rouf traveled to his ex-girlfriend Dr. Rym Alaoui in Brighton, England. When he got to her doorstep, he reportedly handed her a note and viciously threw acid on her face, causing the doctor "life-changing injuries," the report said. Alaoui, who was also Rouf's former associate, had ended their relationship six weeks before the attack. According to The Guardian, Alaoui had to undergo five rounds of reconstructive surgery to fix her injuries because the acid had affected her ability to close her eyes or move her neck. She is now also blind in her right eye.
Before the verdict, Judge Christine Laing Rouf looked in the eyes and said he was aware of what she was doing before the gruesome attack.
"You thought about what you want to do and how you want to do it and planned it for weeks ... You knew exactly what you did wrong and tried to evade responsibility for it in order to continue your medical career." She said.
Alaoui wrote a long and painful statement following the court's decision detailing her future fears as she felt that Rouf had "stolen her career and young adult life."
When I opened the door that day, a substance was thrown in my face that I now know is sulfuric acid. My life has changed since the day I was exposed to this horrific attack. I live in pain and fear for my future well-being and my financial need. The effects of the attack include severe damage to my right eye that I still cannot see from. Damage to the eyelids and skin damage to the face, neck and arm.
I'm still trying to come to terms with further procedures and operations. I am unable to go to work or live my life. I have been robbed of years of my career and young adult life. The psychological impact had been enormous on me, my family, and my loved ones. I cannot imagine why anyone would commit such a deliberate and terrible attack. I can't understand what he had in mind. "
Our thoughts are with Alaoui as she continues to heal from this tragic incident.
