Mehcad Brooks Just Proved There's Nothing CGI About His 'Mortal Kombat' Gains
Actor Mehcad Brooks went all in for his Mortal Kombat workouts - and apparently he hasn't let up since the movie's premiere on HBO Max last week. Yesterday, Brooks, who plays Jax Briggs in the latest adaptation of the classic video game, posted two shirtless photos on Instagram showing his tattered body. No special effects there.
In a caption, Brooks marked his personal trainer Andrew Schuth as well as the Nino Pilla International Academy of Martial Arts, where he did part of his training for the film. Brooks' character, Jax, is known for his impressively swollen torso, and it is fair to say that the actor made the gains necessary to convincingly play the cybernetic super-soldier. (Of course, his intense commitment to the role also flowed into the film's famously gruesome fight scenes.)
Brooks recently spoke to Men's Health Australia about their rigorous diet and fitness program that reportedly consumed around 12,000 calories a day. His intense workouts included boxing with 25-pound weights while running at full speed on a treadmill. The actor even had to quit his vegan diet to meet his high protein goals, saying he has a "caveman body".

Brooks isn't the only Mortal Kombat star undergoing a dramatic physical transformation for the film, either. Co-star Joe Taslim spoke to Men's Health about his own martial arts-focused workout routine where speed and agility took precedence over muscle building. Actor Ludi Lin, who portrayed the character Liu Kang, also broken down his diet plan in our Eat Like video franchise, including how snacking on whole veggies helped him maintain his eight pack.
