Mercedes-Benz Concept EQG makes Schwarzenegger's dreams reality

When Mercedes launched the completely redesigned G-Class in Detroit in 2018, they brought out G-Class fan (and also a product from Austria) Arnold Schwarzenegger to present it. During the banter between him and Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche, Schwarzenegger asked if they would make an electric version for him. I was there and my ears suddenly perked up hoping for some surprising confirmation that they were going to build an electric model. Unfortunately, Zetsche made a general statement that you always have to consider things and weigh the needs. But it seems that Mercedes toyed with the idea, as evidenced by the Mercedes-Benz EQG shown above, which is apparently a near-production vehicle.
Except for a few details, the EQG looks very similar to its gas-powered chassis dispenser. Most of these details are additional lighting. The side rubbing strips are illuminated as well as the badge and the radiator grille border. There are even circular running lights in the mirrors and illuminated blue squares in the massive grille. Instead of a spare tire on the back, there is a square storage box that is supposed to be reminiscent of a wall charging station. On the roof there is a large flat rack with an embossed G at the top and wide additional LED lighting at the front and rear. The EQG also has huge 22-inch wheels.
Mercedes left out details like battery size and performance, but revealed that the EQG has four electric motors. It even has a selectable low range for off-road use. The suspension design is similar with independent front and rear rigid axles mounted on the body-frame chassis. The battery is also stowed in the frame. It should be perfectly capable of crawling over rocks and inclines, and Mercedes says it will meet the same needs as the internal combustion engine models.
A production version of this concept is being developed, but Mercedes has not said when it might be available. If this concept is as close to production as Mercedes says, we'll bet we'll see real business in just a few years. And we bet Schwarzenegger is the first on the list to get one.
