One of the most wanted Mexican cartel leaders threatened the government and his archenemies in highly unusual video messages, including one in which he fought tears after his mother was arrested on the weekend.
Jose "El Marro" Yepez, chairman of the Santa Rosa de Lima cartel, was a thorn in the side of President Andres Lopez Obrador's government as his gang of oil drained off from the state-owned oil company Pemex on an industrial scale.
One of the social media videos shows Yepez taking action against the government after his mother was reportedly arrested during a major security operation in the city of Celeya, the bloodiest state in Mexico, Guanajuato.

"I'll be a stone in your shoe. I'll blow up, you'll see," said Yepez, wearing jeans with a rifle over his shoulder, in the video. Reuters was unable to independently review the videos.
The Mexican security forces said on Sunday that they had arrested members of an organized crime group in a raid in Celeya that found them about a kilogram of methamphetamine and 2 million pesos ($ 88,000).
"Among the detainees are Maria" N ", Juana" N "and Rosalba" N ", suspected financial actors of the criminal organization," said the Mexican security authorities in a joint statement, without naming the Santa Rosa cartel or its leader.
El Universal newspaper said Yepez's mother, sister and girlfriend were all arrested.
Yepez said he feared the authorities would call his mother one of the cartel leaders.
"In the name of my mother and my people ... I'm not afraid of you," he said.
Yepez also said he could form a coalition with the Sinaloa cartel or other criminal groups in the north to fight Santa Rosa 's archenemy Jalisco New Generation Cartel, which was on a bloody expansion offensive to rival the territories in the across the country.
