Michelin-starred restaurant where Gov. Newsom dined during COVID-19 surge got over $2.4 million in PPP loans

According to ABC7's Stephanie Sierra and Lindsey Feingold, the French laundry received more than $ 2.4 million from its paycheck protection program in April.
Both PPP loans were approved on April 30th and are expected to hold a total of 168 employees, according to release reports.
According to ABC7, the French laundry's PPP loan total was 17 times the average restaurant in the California Bay Area.
The French Laundry is a three-star Michelin restaurant run by Thomas Keller, a well-known chef and cookbook author.

The Michelin-starred restaurant where California Governor Gavin Newsom dined last month amid a spike in coronavirus cases received over $ 2.4 million in PPP funding, according to one ABC7 report by Stephanie Sierra and Lindsey Feingold.

The French laundry, a high-end Napa Valley County restaurant, received two Paycheck Protection Program loans from the Small Business Administration in April, the publication reported.
ABC7 said the first loan was more than $ 2.2 million to employ 163 people during the COVID-19 pandemic, while the second loan was $ 194,656 to keep five people.
In ABC7's analysis in the same report, the French laundry's PPP loans were 17 times the average restaurant in the Bay Area, and it was one of at least seven restaurants in the region with two or three Michelin stars that Received PPP loans.
The French laundry did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Today the French laundry has received three Michelin stars.
According to ABC7, guests can purchase an outdoor dining experience for $ 450 per person and a meal of white truffles and caviar for $ 1,200 per person.
The French laundry made headlines earlier this year after Governor Newsom had dinner there with a group of 12 friends for a 50th birthday party on November 6, the Associated Press reported.
The Associated Press also reported that San Francisco's Mayor, London Breed, was seen eating with seven friends at the French laundry on November 7th.
Both lawmakers have apologized for not modeling "better behavior" during the pandemic, the Associated Press said.
Much of the restaurant industry struggled during the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in businesses being temporarily closed and new health regulations in place
Much of the U.S. state of California is under a second order that began on December 6 and is expected to end earlier on December 28, according to the Los Angeles Times.
According to a notice on the restaurant's website, the French laundry will be closed on December 18 and will remain closed for at least three weeks "in accordance with the Regional Stay Home Order of the State of California".
The restrictions are regional and affect areas with less than 15% ICU availability, the California COVID-19 dashboard reported.
